From a 4,000 Acre Cattle Farm to 18 Hole Golf Course and Country Club

Panther Valley Golf & Country Club was originally a part of the estate of Clendenin James Ryan Jr., grandson of Thomas “Fortune” Ryan, a New York City financier who was recorded as the last of the robber barons of Wall Street. The estate was known as Panther Ledge Farm (the name is still visible on the stone pillars forming the gateway of the property as you approach the Pro Shop). Panther Ledge Farm was a 4,000 acre cattle farm where black angus cows were bred and raised. The top four holes (15-16-17-18) were used by the Ryan family as their own layout along what is now known as the “adult swimming pool”.In 1967, Robert Trent Jones was retained to design an 18-hole championship quality golf course. After many meetings, the course development was started in 1968. Nine holes were opened in the Spring of 1969 and by October the full eighteen holes were played. The present large pool and cabana were completed and in use in 1970.
